“If you only attend one gig this month make it this…” DJ Magazine.

The London show marking the release of Phenomenal Handclap Band’s new LP (Form & Control), sees New York’s purveyors of psych, soul, and cosmic disco enter Noise of Art’s psychedelic steam punk world.

Phenomenal Handclap Band’s sound has roots in New York, San Francisco, San Paulo and London. Imagine Curtis Mayfield and Deee-Lite throwing a Nu-Yorican house party with Afro-beat, Cosmic Italo-disco, Turkish psych and ‘70s West Coast music thrown in.

“Brooklyn collective TPHB bring their justly acclaimed psych-rock-cum-cosmic-disco party to town.” (Time Out London)

On the 45th anniversary of the UK’s Psychedelic movement, Noise of Art’s new show is inspired by contemporary steam punk and the 19th Century imagery that inexplicably became prevalent in the late Sixties. It imagines that Sergeant Pepper, Pink Floyd and The Avengers were the result of two universes colliding in 1967; throwing people from a parallel steam punk world into swinging London.

The resulting psychedelic Victoriana features coal-fired flower power, contemporary dancers, curiosities of nature, magic lanterns of psychedelic imagery, steam-powered cosmic house, psyched-out-disco and coal-fired techno.

Press about Phenomenal Handclap Band
“Punchier, grander and more focused than their debut… NYC glam dance collective reach for the stars” Q ****
‘…encapsulates the nostalgic elements of ESG, ELO, Tom Tom Club, The Doors and Sly And The Family Stone, applies a gloss of New York cool and then re-packages it with the modern production of the LCD soundsystem, CSS and Beck variety. Forget the handclap, they’ll take a standing ovation.’ – NME

‘With guitars, keyboards, percussion, and two very chic female singers (who seriously know how to rock leather leggings and sleek jumpers)—the crew took its worldly, genre-spanning sound and turned it up about a thousand notches’ -Elle

‘The PHB are astronauts of progressive soul, moored at the stellar point where rock, funk and psychedelia bloom into cosmic-disco amazingness.’ The Guardian
‘Musically diverse, incredibly melodic and dance-floor ready.’ – New York Post

‘With their multitudinous influences, blending funk, soul, reggae, dance, hip-hop and Brazilian beat, as well as rock, disco and electro, they encapsulate the spirit of the Brooklyn underground.’ – The Sunday Times Culture UK

Continuing Noise of Art’s cross London, pan-European celebration, which sees sister events taking place in Paris and Rome, Noise of Art steps into 93 Feet East for a Rome vs Paris, Prague and London four way dance off.

Signed to hot Parisian label Record Makers (home to acts as diverse as Sebastian Tellier and Kavinksy and originally set up by Air), Acid Washed are a live electronic duo who squelch a myriad influences into their post acid techno sound. Comprised of Richard d’Alpert and Andrew Claristidge, the duo takes Chicago house and Detroit techno, add some Giorgio Moroder and end-up somewhere in a late Sixties cyber world.

Italian partners in crime Severino and Nico de Ceglia, have made names for themselves on the London scene through their associations with Horse Meat Disco and Radio 1’s Essential Selection. Hyena Stomp, their joint Italo project, kicks out the finest house sets this side of Nineties Rimini.

New London act Dec Shoes have spent the summer playing everything from festival main stages to low ceilinged street bars this summer with their live vocal and vinyl sets. Their sound combines, house, techno and bass.

Hentai Corporation are what Led Zeppelin would have sounded like if they’d formed after drum n bass had been invented – and grown-up listening to traditional Czech music and Napalm Death. Prog rock done Prague style.

Holding it all together, Noise of Art founder and resident DJ Ben Osborne will be heading-up the mix down in the Pink Room with homeboy Rupert The Brewer kicking things off with a fine selection of his home made funky jams.

Reading and Leeds Festival favourites, Beef Warehouse, will be bring their stadium filling sound to the Red Rooms smaller ambience, mashing through the genres in their inimitable DJ style, while Cosmic Onion Field will be providing their warped brand of psycho-delic atmospherics

Visuals, dance and performance come courtesy of the awesomely creative project The People Pile, and the stunning projections of Your Mum and Overlap.

Mehdi

by Noise of Art Team on Sep.21, 2011, under Events

It was with great sadness that Noise of Art heard about the passing of DJ Mehdi. He played Noise of Art five years ago and we’ve known each other for sometime. He was always happy, smiling and glad to see everyone. He was an inspired DJ and a kind, generous person. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.

The Guardian carried a half page obituary by Ben Osborne last Saturday. You can read it online here. http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/sep/15/dj-medhi-obituary

Following a day of music and art events at Battersea Park, Noise of Art and Trees For Cities continue the Metiss’age activities with a night of electronic music, surround visuals, costumed contemporary dancers and immersive clubbing.

The evening sees pioneering deep house maestro, Peter Kruder, making a rare London appearance. Kruder rose to prominence as half of Kruder and Dorfmiester in the mid Nineties, and has continually contributed to electronic music’s evolution through deep house and broken beat. His DJ sets are both imaginative and floor shaking.

Kruder is joined by Si Begg, a similarly influential and restless musical soul, and Ashley Beedle, whose never ending projects and pseudonyms (including Black Science Orchestra, Dark Star, Delta House of Funk and X Press 2) have seen him continually re-define house, neo-soul, reggae, acid jazz and psychedelic funk. New act Dec shoes are a vinyl and vocal double act who’ve been raising the temperature at festivals and low ceilinged clubs throughout the summer. Producer and DJ, Portfolio, cut his teeth as resident DJ at Singapore’s celebrated Zouk club. Having recently moved to London, his new sound has become darker and deeper and has already been picked-up for compilations by Steve Lawler, amongst others. David Jenkinson has been busy exporting his C21 club around the world, but tonight returns to his home turf, while Trees For Cities regular Rupert the Brewer will be bringing his collection of smouldering funk to the table. Noise of Art founder Ben Osborne will deliver a trademark round of roof and floor bumping music.

Completing the immersive club experience there will be surround visuals, performance art and spectacular contemporary dance pieces provided by Noise of Art’s regular contributors Your Mum, Overlap and The People Pile, plus an alien anti-fashion show by artist Mark Scott Wood.

Money raised from the event will go to Trees for Cities to plant Metiss’age trees in inner cities.

Metiss’age is supported by the cultural programme of the European Union.
