This month’s events include music for a new play in Cardiff, DJ sets in Prague and London and on going preparations for Marseilles in July and Chateau Perché in August. Meanwhile, this week sees Ben Osborne play 93 Feet East in Brick Lane on Thursday 29 March, as Salad Undressed (aka Salad) launch their LP. Camden underground returns to The Constitution, on the canal in the Camden/ Kings Cross hinterlands, on Good Friday. And DJ Ben Osborne will be collaborating at the Royal Welsh College of Drama and Music with playwright Sophie Rashbrook and director Polly Graham, on the soundtrack for Sophie’s new play Ralph – Enemy Alien, with workshop performances in Wales and London in early April.

Ben Osborne will also return to Prague’s Cross club on Saturday 21 April, in the lead up to a series of events there later this year.

Friday 4 May also sees the launch of Vors Sprung, a new live electronic project, with A Man Called Adam, Orka, Ben 0 & Maella and Sorrdes playing live.

Noise of Art Panel at MaMA 2017, Paris

Reflecting our exhibition at this year’s MAMA festival, Noise of Art has gathered a panel of pioneers and practitioners to discuss France’s 100 year history of electronic music and whether Paris can be considered the birth place of electronic music?

The discussion will include the culture, art, politics and fashion that has accompanied French electronic music. It will look at the earliest stages of French music, including the role of Russolo, Vares, Martenot, Schaffer and Henry, as well as that of Laurent Garnier, Jack de Marseilles, Daft Punk and Jacques. It will discuss the influence of jazz and African music, the importance of gay clubs and radio stations and the role of and challenges faced by female DJs, such as Jenifer Cardini, Chloe and Sex Toy.

Convergence Festival presents Noise of Art’s comfortably spun

For this collaboration, between textile designer CAVALCANTI and electronic music and art outfit Noise of Art, Ben Osborne uses a textile factory in Portugal as an instrument, creating electronic music out of the sounds of looms and tufting machines making CAVALCANTI’s specifically designed rugs. The design of the textiles are then also translated into digital signals and patched through synths, to create other-worldly melodies and baselines.

‘Comfortably Spun’ turns the weaving and tufting techniques used in the textile industry into music.

The sounds and rhythms of the looms and tufting tools have been recorded and arranged into contemporary electronic tracks, using techniques from early electronic ‘tape” music. To complete the creative loop, the designs of the rugs have been digitally mapped into synthesiser patterns, adding melody to the rhythms of the factory.

On Friday 18 March the AV installation will be joined by live sets from White Noise – the band behind the UK’s first electronic LP in 1969, live electronic improvisors, The Deben Collectove and DJ sets from Horton Jupiter and Ben Osborne.

Convergence presents Noise of Art’s Lab/ Comfortably Spun at Red Gallery Friday 18 March

On Friday 18 March Comfortably Spun, Noise of Art’s audio visual installation at Convergence festival, will be joined by a live club night celebrating the legacy of the late Sixties Arts Lab club night.

Arts Lab was one of the first clubs in London to bring art installations, film, technology and experimental music into the same space. One regular who modelled his career on Arts Club’s cross platform art message was David Bowie, who was so influenced by the club that, after the central London venue closed, he started his own Arts Lab in the suburbs.

Tonight’s show features a rare live set by White Noise (pictured), the band behind the UK’s first electronic LP. More importantly for tonight’s show, they were also the band that first took electronic music into Arts Lab – using their otherworldly, futurist vision of music to soundtrack early experiments with pop video. White Noise’s appearance tonight connects today’s experiments in multi media with its London origins at Arts Lab.

Joining White Noise  are The Deben Collective, a live, experimental electronic outift formed by Jan Pulsford, whose credits include works with Cindi Lauper, The Thompson Twins and Nile Rodgers.

On the decs, throwing down a mix of twisted disco and cosmic house, will be Noise of Art’s Ben Osborne and Horton Jupiter, former frontman of krautrockers They Came From The Stars I Saw Them.

The night will also feature Comfortably Spun, an art installation by Ben Osborne and CAVALCANTI, which uses a textile factory in Portugal as an instrument.

Noise of Art launches Carnival of Colours at Brixton Bloc, London on 12th November.

Noise of Art is launching into it’s tenth anniversary year with a month of proto-psychedelic happenings at Brixton Bloc throughout December, including an Acid Test Weekender and New Psychedelia’s Eve on 31st December.

Noise of Art and Brixton Bloc are launching a series of pop-up music and art events in the heart of Brixton. Drawing inspiration from the light art, musical experimentation and avant-garde dance and theatre that pre-figured psychedelia in 1966, the events are named after the Beatles first fully electronic song, Carnival of Colour (which was only ever performed once, at London’s first electronic music festival at the Roundhouse).

The events will include live music, sound pieces, DJ sets, projected art, installations, street art, pop up restaurants and street food stalls, and a Christmas market.

Acts playing during the month include London’s original Acid House hero and DJ behind Legendary Shoom nightclub, Danny Rampling,  electronic band White Noise (who released the UK’s first fully electronic LP in 1969), Horse Meat Disco’s cosmic disco don, DJ Severino, original Balearic darlings and Glastonbury headliners, The Woodentops, Czech electronic trailblazer Boris Karloff (debut London live gig), The Deben Collective and many more to be announced.

After a free launch event on Thursday 12 November, events proper begin on 27 November and continue throughout December, with a festive closing party on 19 December followed by Noise of Art’s New psychedelia’s Eve event on 31 December.

Brixton Bloc is a pop up cultural space in a disused social housing block on Stockwell Road (behind Brixton Academy). London based music and cross platform art collective, Noise of Art, is teaming up with Brixton Bloc and other London promoters, collaborators, bands and artists, to present a series of alternative festive live music, DJ and club nights. The nights lead up to New Year’s Eve, when Noise Art will launch it’s 10th Anniversary year with a celebration of the birth of psychedelia. Marking ten years since Noise of Art launched in partnership with the Tate and programmed the first three nights at Latitude’s Music and Film arena, Noise of Art founder DJ Ben Osborne returns to play the opening night of Latitude 2015.

The night, part of Latitude’s ten year celebrations, has been commissioned by the Tate and will seethe Music and Film arena transformed into a clash between a real festival and a virtual club night (created using Mindecraft).

Animated visuals, created by Minecraft hackers and inspired by the Tate’s surrealist artworks, will include contributions from the crowd, creating  an alternative Latitude’s dreamscape.

Festival goers are invited to contribute at the start of the evening to help create visions in Minecraft, before getting down to electronic beats, as Latitude’s virtual nightclub doppelganger emerges on the screens.

DJs Beatrice Dillon (Trilogy Tapes, NTS Radio) and Toby Kidd (Are We Here? Thin Man Records) will be responding to the music of game culture to start the evening, while DJ Ben Osborne (Noise of Art) will kick the party off against the backdrop of looping Minecraft dreamscapes from 11pm onwards.

The night is part of Tate Worlds, a collaboration between Tate, thecommonpeople.tv and BlockWorks.

Our next paddle through the cultural shockwaves still rippling from the era of psychedelia draws inspiration from seminal London counter culture night club, the Arts Lab.

A short-lived experimental club night, Arts Lab was opened in 1967 by Jim Haynes, a leading figure in London’s counter-culture.

Amongst Arts Lab regulars was a young David Vorhaus, who formed pioneering electronic band White Noise in 1968, with his partner Deliah Derbyshire – herself a prominent member the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Deliah was also responsible for the Dr Who theme tune.

White Noise’s first LP, An Electric Storm, is widely regarded as the UK’s first proper electronic LP. David and White Noise will be making a rare live appearance at Smart Lab.

Other regulars at the original Arts Lab included John Lennon, Yoko Ono and David Bowie – who performed at Arts Lab in December 1968 and later set-up his own Beckenham Arts Lab in honour of the central London version.

Smart Lab is inviting people from every genre of the arts and technology to come and get creative. The original Arts Lab invited people to pay what they wanted to. For the new version the music in the bar and on the canal side is free, but to see the additional acts in the live room the audience pays per performance. The acts set the fee for each performance themselves.

Smart Lab is held on the banks of the Regent’s Canal in Dalston at the Barge House, home to the popular Sunday brunch – Breakfast in Bread.

Noise of Art launches 2015 activity and Boom Room 13-16 March

Boom Room #1 - nuclear airforce base

Noise of Art launches into its tenth year of activity with a series of events in and around London’s Convergence Festival. The events, two in conversation sessions and three gigs, take place 13 March – 16 March in London.

Noise of Art’s Boom Room project is inspired by the role sound manipulation has played in electronic music. It will be turning unusual locations and buildings into musical effects units to be used live – starting with a disused nuclear airforce base at Benwaters and the Adnams brewery in Southwold.

The line up includes: Andrew Weatherall, Mental Overdrive, White Noise, Bernard Szajner (aka Z), Saycet (Paris), Ben Osborne, Eat Lights Become Lights, White Noise Sound (LP launch), Clara Brea, Addictive TV and more to be announced.

Organised in and around Convergence Festival, Noise of Art is also partnering with the Mayor of Paris, French Music Export Office, Institut Francais, Rough Trade East, The Wire, Heavenly Social, Big Chill House, Woodbridge Art and Music Event, Old Jet Studios and Adnams.

Noise of Art Starts Week of Events on 13 March with electronic legends White Noise and Z, live and panel discussion

szajnerNoise of Art launches into 2015 with a week of events, starting with two events on Friday 13 March, followed by panels, live shows and club nights in and around London’s Convergence festival.

At 6pm on Friday 13 March Noise of Art is teaming up with French Music Export Office, Institute Francais, Rough Trade East and The Wire to present two celebrated pioneers of electronic music – White Noise‘s David Vorhaus and Bernard Szajner, aka Z.

Straight after we’ll be heading over to The Social, where 1960s electronic legends White Noise will perform a completely new set live. We heard a bit of this last night and  it’s, um, rather good. The live show will be followed by a Noise of Art vs Heavenly Social club night.

Boom Room 2015

As a part of Convergence and Noise of Art’s exploration of technology and art (and following-on from NOA’s sold out series of 100 years of electronic music shows in 2014), NOA returns with a theme that explores sound manipulation’s effect on contemporary music.

To celebrate the origins of sound effects, where early recording studios were built with “natural” echo or reverb, Noise of Art is creating a series of Reverb effects chambers using unusual architectural locations, such as nuclear aircraft hangers on a disused US nuclear airforce base.

Launching this new series at Convergence, Noise of Art has invited pioneering DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall to DJ using the Boom Room effects, alongside two launch sets from Rocket Girl acts Eats Light Becomes Light and White Noise Sound.

Eat Lights Become LightsWeatherall has been at the forefront of UK’s electronic scene since the late 1980s. A tireless innovator, and peerless producer and remixer, with a John Peel like passion for discovering music and sounds,  he’s also one of the most imaginative DJs around.

New Rocket Girl signing, Swansea’s six piece White Noise Sound, combine the hypnotic rock of Spacemen 3, with psychedelia, sonic loops and drones and indie dance floor sensibility. Tonight they launch their much anticipated new LP, Like A Pyramid of Fire, released in March 2015 on Rocket Girl.

Neil Rudd’s boundary crossing project, Eat Lights Become Lights, joins the line up to debut their new live show. Their LP, Into Forever, released in spring 2014, pre-echoed much of the drone and looped based music that followed, containing both dance floor bombs and long, swelling ambient opus’s.

Pioneering electronic musician Per Martinsen (aka Mental Overdrive) and Noise of Art founder Dj Ben Osborne, the creators of the Boom Room effects units, will be debuting new music specifically designed for the Boom Rooms.

Noise of Art has partnered with Vinita Joshi and her Rocket Girl label for this event. Long term champions of off centre music, Rocket Girl has consistently supported quality acts too often ignored by the mainstream.

Created by pioneering Norwegian electronic artist Mental Overdrive and Noise of Art’s Ben Osborne, the “natural” echo chambers being used tonight will be linked over broadband to Village Underground and used live to manipulate the music being played.

Sound effects and the manipulation of recorded music have been at the heart of modern music since Sam Philips first added echo to Elvis’ vocals and Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry used magnetic tape to turn industrial sounds into music.

Early recordings effects were created architecturally – with some recording studios being purposely designed with “natural” reverb, to help recordings sound closer to the real thing.

Noise of Art’s 2015 project uses new technology to go back to these roots, linking the music  made in the venue over broadband to distant echo chambers in unusual places, such as the abandoned bunkers of a nuclear airforce base on Britain’s east coast. To help create these effects chambers, Noise of Art has partnered with The Old Jet studio, a new state of the art recording and tour rehearsal studio set up by Jesse Quin (Keane).

The acts selected to play come from a range of genres, but all have a connected interest in the core of early electronic music’s use of loops and drones.
