Convergence Festival presents Noise of Art’s comfortably spun

For this collaboration, between textile designer CAVALCANTI and electronic music and art outfit Noise of Art, Ben Osborne uses a textile factory in Portugal as an instrument, creating electronic music out of the sounds of looms and tufting machines making CAVALCANTI’s specifically designed rugs. The design of the textiles are then also translated into digital signals and patched through synths, to create other-worldly melodies and baselines.

‘Comfortably Spun’ turns the weaving and tufting techniques used in the textile industry into music.

The sounds and rhythms of the looms and tufting tools have been recorded and arranged into contemporary electronic tracks, using techniques from early electronic ‘tape” music. To complete the creative loop, the designs of the rugs have been digitally mapped into synthesiser patterns, adding melody to the rhythms of the factory.

On Friday 18 March the AV installation will be joined by live sets from White Noise – the band behind the UK’s first electronic LP in 1969, live electronic improvisors, The Deben Collectove and DJ sets from Horton Jupiter and Ben Osborne.

Convergence presents Noise of Art’s Lab/ Comfortably Spun at Red Gallery Friday 18 March

On Friday 18 March Comfortably Spun, Noise of Art’s audio visual installation at Convergence festival, will be joined by a live club night celebrating the legacy of the late Sixties Arts Lab club night.

Arts Lab was one of the first clubs in London to bring art installations, film, technology and experimental music into the same space. One regular who modelled his career on Arts Club’s cross platform art message was David Bowie, who was so influenced by the club that, after the central London venue closed, he started his own Arts Lab in the suburbs.

Tonight’s show features a rare live set by White Noise (pictured), the band behind the UK’s first electronic LP. More importantly for tonight’s show, they were also the band that first took electronic music into Arts Lab – using their otherworldly, futurist vision of music to soundtrack early experiments with pop video. White Noise’s appearance tonight connects today’s experiments in multi media with its London origins at Arts Lab.

Joining White Noise  are The Deben Collective, a live, experimental electronic outift formed by Jan Pulsford, whose credits include works with Cindi Lauper, The Thompson Twins and Nile Rodgers.

On the decs, throwing down a mix of twisted disco and cosmic house, will be Noise of Art’s Ben Osborne and Horton Jupiter, former frontman of krautrockers They Came From The Stars I Saw Them.

The night will also feature Comfortably Spun, an art installation by Ben Osborne and CAVALCANTI, which uses a textile factory in Portugal as an instrument.

Noise of Art Starts Week of Events on 13 March with electronic legends White Noise and Z, live and panel discussion

szajnerNoise of Art launches into 2015 with a week of events, starting with two events on Friday 13 March, followed by panels, live shows and club nights in and around London’s Convergence festival.

At 6pm on Friday 13 March Noise of Art is teaming up with French Music Export Office, Institute Francais, Rough Trade East and The Wire to present two celebrated pioneers of electronic music – White Noise‘s David Vorhaus and Bernard Szajner, aka Z.

Straight after we’ll be heading over to The Social, where 1960s electronic legends White Noise will perform a completely new set live. We heard a bit of this last night and  it’s, um, rather good. The live show will be followed by a Noise of Art vs Heavenly Social club night.

Booka Shade headline 100 years of electronic music events April 1914-2014

Booka_Shade_Packshot_300Booka Shade are to headline Noise of Art’s month of shows celebrating 100 years since the first electronic music concert in April 1914.

Throughout April Noise of Art will celebrate of 100 years since Luigi Russolo played his debut concert using his prototype synthesisers. The month of events will culminate with special performance by leading live German electronic act, Booka Shade, at The Convergence Festival, Village Underground, on Friday 25 April.

With the full line-up yet to be announced, the first batch of tickets have already sold out and the second issue tickets are now sale (click here).

April marks 100 years since the first electronic music concert in April 1914. Noise of Art is celebrating the occasion with a month of events and the 2014 London debut of Booka Shade’s new live set. The Berlin based electronic act are playing the flagship night of Noise of Art’s centenary events, acknowledging Germany’s role in the history of electronic music. Their new show is based on Booka Shade’s critically praised fifth album, Eve – itself recorded using vintage synthesisers.

With more acts to be announced, the events mark 100 years since Luigi Russolo, author of “Manifesto For An Art of Noises”, unveiled his prototype synthesisers in April 1914.
