New York’s Phenomenal Handclap Band are teaming up with London music and art collective, Noise of Art, to play their surround club experience, the Psychedelic Curiosity Show, at Village Underground, London, on 24 February.

Early bird and early discount tickest sold out:

The London show marking the release of Phenomenal Handclap Band’s new LP (Form & Control), sees New York’s purveyors of psych, soul, and cosmic disco enter Noise of Art’s psychedelic steam punk world.

Phenomenal Handclap Band broke through with their US and European club hit ‘15 To 20’. Their sound has roots in New York, San Francisco, San Paulo and London. Imagine Curtis Mayfield and Deee-Lite throwing a Nu-Yorican party with Afro-beat, Cosmic Italo-disco, Turkish psych and ‘70s West Coast music spinning on the decks. Kaleidoscopic grooves doesn’t begin to describe their live sound.

On the 45th anniversary of the UK’s Psychedelic movement, Noise of Art’s new show is inspired by contemporary steam punk and the 19th Century imagery that inexplicably became prevalent in the late Sixties. It imagines that Sergeant Pepper, Pink Floyd and The Avengers were the result of two universes colliding in 1967; throwing people from a parallel steam punk world into swinging London.

The resulting psychedelic Victoriana features coal-fired flower power, contemporary dancers, curiosities of nature, magic lanterns of psychedelic imagery, steam-powered cosmic house, psyched-out-disco and coal-fired techno.

Press about Phenomenal Handclap Band
“Punchier, grander and more focused than their debut… NYC glam dance collective reach for the stars” Q ****
‘…encapsulates the nostalgic elements of ESG, ELO, Tom Tom Club, The Doors and Sly And The Family Stone, applies a gloss of New York cool and then re-packages it with the modern production of the LCD soundsystem, CSS and Beck variety. Forget the handclap, they’ll take a standing ovation.’ – NME

‘With guitars, keyboards, percussion, and two very chic female singers (who seriously know how to rock leather leggings and sleek jumpers)—the crew took its worldly, genre-spanning sound and turned it up about a thousand notches’ -Elle

New Year’s Eve at Sketch, London
31st December 2011 – 1st December 2012
Sketch, 9 Conduit Street, London, W1S 2XG

The Noise of Art entry list for this event is now full. If we’re not seeing you on the 31st we hope to see you very soon at our next events in 2012.

Noise of Art returns to the stunning party space at Sketch for NYE 2012, with a new immersive club event featuring music, art, film, performance, dance, surround projections and occurrences of curiosity.

On the 45th anniversary of the UK’s Psychedelic movement, Noise of Art’s new show is inspired by the 19th Century imagery of the late Sixties (think Blake’s iconic cover art and inner sleeve cut out moustaches). The immersive club event imagines that Sergeant Pepper, Pink Floyd and The Avengers were the result of two universes colliding in 1967; throwing people from a parallel steam punk world into the Carnaby Street scene of swinging London (which happens to be two minutes walk from the venue).

The resulting psychedelic Victoriana features DJs, coal-fired flower power, contemporary dancers, and folk singers, curiosities of nature and, visiting the capital for the very first time, the drawing room disco that is a Benefit For Mr Kite, and 360 degree magic lanterns of psychedelic imagery.

Musical acts will begin with Sixties folktronics, and rise to steam-powered cosmic house, psyched-out-disco and coal-fired techno.

“When it comes to mega multimedia events, Ben Osborne and his collective, Noise of Art, are all over it.” Time Out“… plenty of great music and top visuals for your dollar.” CMU
“Unique venues… and quality electronica” iDJ
“The idea’s brilliant” FACT
“… bound to free the crowd from any… torpor.” The Guardian
“This gets a very big Londonist thumbs up.” The Londonist
“You’re unlikely to attend another event in London like this, so our advice is to get your ticket sharpish.” DJ Magazine

Following a day of music and art events at Battersea Park, Noise of Art and Trees For Cities continue the Metiss’age activities with a night of electronic music, surround visuals, costumed contemporary dancers and immersive clubbing.

The evening sees pioneering deep house maestro, Peter Kruder, making a rare London appearance. Kruder rose to prominence as half of Kruder and Dorfmiester in the mid Nineties, and has continually contributed to electronic music’s evolution through deep house and broken beat. His DJ sets are both imaginative and floor shaking.

Kruder is joined by Si Begg, a similarly influential and restless musical soul, and Ashley Beedle, whose never ending projects and pseudonyms (including Black Science Orchestra, Dark Star, Delta House of Funk and X Press 2) have seen him continually re-define house, neo-soul, reggae, acid jazz and psychedelic funk. New act Dec shoes are a vinyl and vocal double act who’ve been raising the temperature at festivals and low ceilinged clubs throughout the summer. Producer and DJ, Portfolio, cut his teeth as resident DJ at Singapore’s celebrated Zouk club. Having recently moved to London, his new sound has become darker and deeper and has already been picked-up for compilations by Steve Lawler, amongst others. David Jenkinson has been busy exporting his C21 club around the world, but tonight returns to his home turf, while Trees For Cities regular Rupert the Brewer will be bringing his collection of smouldering funk to the table. Noise of Art founder Ben Osborne will deliver a trademark round of roof and floor bumping music.

Completing the immersive club experience there will be surround visuals, performance art and spectacular contemporary dance pieces provided by Noise of Art’s regular contributors Your Mum, Overlap and The People Pile, plus an alien anti-fashion show by artist Mark Scott Wood.

Money raised from the event will go to Trees for Cities to plant Metiss’age trees in inner cities.

Metiss’age is supported by the cultural programme of the European Union.

Noise of Art will launch its new show, Attack The Block – Party, at this year’s Latitude Frestival, 14-17 July 2011, with a mega line up of electronic music, including.

Xpress 2 // Si Begg // Lighthouses // AutoKratz // Dec Shoes // Ben Osborne // Overlap // Prick Image // The People Pile // Mark Scott Wood // visuals// performance artists and more

Noise of Art will continue its evolving steam punk sci-fi journey, UFO, at Latitude with ‘Attack The Block – Party’, a new chapter loosley inspired by Joe Cornish’s recently released film and Suffolk’s UFO Rendlesham incident.

Connecting the Seventies, an era of classic sci-fi imagery and New York’s seminal disco Block Parties – with today’s club scene, ‘Attack The Block – Party’ features a disco-tech sound track from some of the most revered pioneers in electronic music, alongside some of the newest arrivals.

Visual contributions come from hot club and up-and-coming street and gallery artists, while a troupe of contemporary dancers and performances artists complete the sensory immersion.

X-Press 2 are best known for their 2002 hit UK single, ‘Lazy’. Comprising of DJs Rocky and Diesel (aka Problem Kids/ Ballistic Brothers). Their first single, “Say What,” peaked at number 32 in the U.K. chart in October 1993. Further club hits were followed in 2002 with the top 10 deep house hit single “Lazy”, featuring Talking Heads’ David Byrne. Their third album, featuring a number of yet to be announced cool collaborations, is due to be released on Skint later this summer.

Si Begg is a highly original producer and inspiration to both the dub step/ London bass and new disco scenes. He’s also recorded music for films, television and advertisements and sound design for television channels, including the BBC, Channel 4 and MTV.

Autokratz were first spotted by French label Kitsuné. Based in London, AutoKratz made their LP debut in 2009 with Animal. They regularly feature on the annual series of Kitsuné Maison compilations, starting with the inclusion of “Pardon Garçon” on the fifth volume in 2007. AutoKratz have also remixed tracks by artists such as Underworld, Fischerspooner and La Roux.

Lighthouses have been variously described as “Bloc Party meets Justice”, “Daft Punk crossed with Soulwax” “Death from Above versus Delphic”… The real lighthouse at Orford Ness, near the Latitude site, has frequently been used to explain away the strange radiation and flashing lights during the UFO sighting at Rendlesham in 1980. This has nothing to do with the Lighthouses playing our UFO event. But according to loads of predictions, they’re expected to fly.

Dec Shoes formed when the core duo collaborated to write and perform a soundtrack for Noise of Art’s show at Latitude last year. A couple of months after they were asked to play a gig at London’s Southbank Centre, followed by a serries of small club appearances. This has lead to their first festival appearances in Europe and being invited to play on top of BT Tower to celebrate the Olympics.

Surrounding the music, Noise of Art collaborators Mark Scott Wood and Friends, Prick Image, Overlap and The People Pile will immerse the audience in specially created sci fi imagery, interactive performance, solar landscapes, lunar missions, UFO landings and extraordinary creatures.

Meanwhile Noise of Art founder and DJ Ben Osborne will be joining the dots.

Slipped Disco hosts a night of horror themed projections, cosmic house, bin shaking b-lines and sci-fi funk. One time Stompa Funk and Radio Slave member, Serge Santiago is stepping up to big things right now, having signed his Retro/Grade project to Mike Pickering’s re-launched Deconstruction label. Fellow Slipped Disco resident, and genre hopping DJ Ben Osborne will be bringing his free ranging mix to the proceedings, while Rupert The Brewer will be setting his phasers to stun as he unleashes a cargo of funk fuelled electronics.

On Friday 30th July, runaway success story Slipped Disco’s UFO returns to Kings Cross with two floors of cosmic house, space funk and a roof terrace.

The night, inspired by London’s late ‘60’s UFO club, takes over the Big Chill House with a firing line up of jackin house, psychedelic beats, cosmic disco, wigged out funk and analogue electronics.

It sees seminal Nineties eclectic-cosmic DJ and Tummy Touch label boss, Tim “Love” Lee on the wheels of steel. Apart from being the man who discovered Groove Armada back in the 1990s, Lee has recently been causing a buzz wih his latest pych discovery, The Phenomenal Handclap Band.

He joins residents Ben Osborne and X-Press 2 man, Diesel, behind the decks, while Rupert The Brewer keeps it funky upstairs.

Captain Credible is literally from another planet. Norway. His show is an extraordinary, irresistible mix of theatre, music and insanity. This is his first time back since his UK debut at Slipped Disco last year. Not to be missed.

Also playing live, The 9000 return to rock our house down with their funked-up brand of electronic music meets Boosty Collins.

Other-worldly imagery and visuals come courtesy of regular art teams Overlap and Your Mum, while resident photographer Roulla will be on hand to portrait the glamorous.

Inspired by the 30th Anniversary of the UK’s most famous UFO incident at RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1980, we’ve joined forces with Town Hall Galleries, Ipswich, to launch a spectacular immersive club event at Latitude on Friday 16 July.

Noise of Art’s new show, UFO: Rendlesham Incident, has a peak-time slot from midnight – 3am, where we’ll be bring some of London’s finest club acts and DJs to the festival’s Music and Film Arena on its opening night.

Expect a 360-degree performance of cosmic disco, surround visuals, space freaks and interactive performers. A one-off live cosmic super-group featuring My Toys Like Me, The 9000, We Are KAN’T and critically acclaimed DJs Severino and Ben Osborne will all be providing the interstellar soundtrack.

The event will be followed by an Alien Art Hunt at Latitude Festival on the Saturday and Sunday, featuring real artworks for finders to take home. Look out for details of the high profile and up and coming artists involved, and where the hunts will be. If in doubt, ask an alien.
